Playboy Virgin Mary Cover Sparks Outrage In Mexico

Playboy magazine apologized for a controversial cover featuring a scantily-clad woman resembling the Virgin Mary, Reuters reported.

The December edition was published Thursday, just before the Mexican festival honoring Mary known as the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Playboy Enterprises Inc., based in Chicago, released a statement Friday explaining that the company did not approve the cover because the Mexican version of the magazine is published by a licensee, according to Reuters.

"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the company said.

Excuse me, but the Catholic Church has absolutely NO credibility. For centuries it has condoned torture (the Inquisition), corruption (indulgences---give me money, God will forgive your sins), and sodomy (homosexual priests screwing young boys). It has no moral high ground to criticize anything other than its own sinfulness. Mary did not pose for a sculpture nor a painting. No pose Playboy can authorize can factually represent Jesus' mother. Catholics need to recognize that statues and paintings are manmade objects just as rooted in fiction as their religion is.

As a Muslim, I'd like to echo the sentiment of the priest (quoted in the original CNN article as saying this was offensive to Catholics) and say: It's totally offensive to a billion MUSLIMS in the world!

Thank you for defending our beloved Virgin Mary.

Soulafa, thank you for your comment. Excuse me for my ignorance...is it a Muslim belief that Mary is somehow more than the vessel through which God's Son was born? Protestant Christianity does not ascribe to her special properties like the Cult of Mary (Catholicism) does. She gave birth to Jesus. Is she somehow then more than Jesus in the view of Islam?
